40 years of Poltrona Frau In Motion on display in Turin

16 September 2026

Poltrona Frau celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Poltrona Frau In Motion Business Unit with the exhibition Abitare l’automobile. 40 anni di Poltrona Frau In Motion, hosted at the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile in Turin through Sunday, October 11, 2026.

For 40 years, Poltrona Frau In Motion has explored movement as a field of research, developing solutions for the automotive, aviation, and yachting sectors that bring together design, material innovation, artisanal savoir-faire, and technological expertise. The exhibition guides visitors through the different stages of the creative process, from concept to production, while a timeline traces the Business Unit’s most significant milestones. Sketches, materials, prototypes, and working documents reveal what usually remains behind the scenes: research, an intimate knowledge of materials, artisanal craftsmanship, and the ability to transform an idea into a tangible experience.

The exhibition journey begins with the Lancia Thema 8.32, the Ferrari-powered model that marked Poltrona Frau’s entry into the automotive sector in 1986. Its hand-crafted leather interiors represent the first step in a journey that brought the brand’s manufacturing savoir-faire into the world of mobility.

At the heart of the exhibition is Vanity Fair XC In Motion, a new limited edition of just 40 pieces created to celebrate the Business Unit’s anniversary. The project interprets the culture of movement through a dialogue between design and art, paying tribute to Ivo Pannaggi’s 1922 work “Dinamismo assoluto della mano sinistra” (“Absolute Dynamism of the Left Hand”), connected to the Futurist exploration of gesture, movement, and energy.

The opening also featured the talk Abitare l’automobile, with Giovanni Maiolo, General Manager of Poltrona Frau In Motion; Flavio Manzoni, Chief Design Officer at Ferrari; and Rossella Guasco, Vice President, CMF Design Europe at Stellantis. The concept of “inhabiting the automobile” goes beyond the purely functional dimension of travel to envision a more personal and sensory experience, one that is increasingly connected to the idea of living. The discussion explored the evolution of the vehicle interior and the role of design, materials, craftsmanship, and innovation in shaping new ways of experiencing mobility and interpreting contemporary luxury.
