Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain

fondation cartier v1

In the heart of Paris, facing the Louvre, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain opens its new headquarters at Place du Palais-Royal, inside a historic Haussmann-style building dating back to 1855, reimagined by Jean Nouvel as a dynamic space open to dialogue between art, architecture, and the city. Through its Custom Interiors Business Unit, Poltrona Frau contributed to the project by creating 120 bespoke seats for the new auditorium, developed in collaboration with Jean Nouvel Design.

Designed with a wooden structure and upholstered in red velvet, the seats are the result of an ongoing dialogue between architectural vision and technical expertise, blending harmoniously into an immersive space where light, performance, and public experience converge. The monochromatic character of the auditorium transforms the armchairs into an essential architectural element, becoming an integral part of the space’s visual and sensory identity.

The Fondation Cartier’s new headquarters, inaugurated in October 2025, interprets the institution’s multidisciplinary mission through a flexible architectural concept designed to host exhibitions, visual arts, performances, and cinema. In this context, Poltrona Frau Custom Interiors reaffirms its expertise in designing tailor-made solutions for cultural institutions and internationally renowned architectural projects, combining craftsmanship, technical innovation, and design sensitivity.

Jean Nouvel

Born in Fumel (France) 1945. After he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, Jean Nouvel entered the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1966 and obtained his degree in 1971. Assistant to the architect Claude Parent and inspired by urban planner and essayist Paul Virilio, he started his first architecture practice in 1970. He became a founding member of the “Mars 1976” Movement whose purpose was to oppose the architects’corporatism and then a founder of French Architecture Union. His strong stances on contemporary architecture in the urban context together with his unfailing ability to inject originality into all the projects he undertakes have formed his international image. Jean Nouvel’s approach does not result from considerations of style or ideology, but from a quest to create a unique concept for a singular combination of people, place and time. His most notable projects include the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (Paris), the Galeries Lafayette (Berlin), the Quai Branly Museum (Paris), the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the National Museum of Qatar (Doha), the 53W53 tower (New York), the Museum of Art Pudong (Shanghai) and the Duo towers (Paris).
