Mesa Round Table by Poltrona Frau, Ligurian split slate top, grey Pietra Serena stone column, excellence of Italian design

Mesa | Round table

Lella and Massimo Vignelli

Starting from
€ 13.685

The Mesa table has a Ligurian slate top which, thanks to the traditional splitting technique, maintains the rock’s natural grooves and lines on the surface. A lower shelf in burnished steel sheet metal provides further stability and resistance. The load bearing column is in grey pietra serena with a plastic shaped tip inserted in the base. The joint between the top and the column is made of tubular burnished steel to which a three-bracket joint plate is attached so it is possible to alter the position of the top.

Concept and Design

An icon of formal purity designed in 1985 by Lella and Massimo Vignelli and now re-released by Poltrona Frau. The Mesa table is formed by combining two simple geometric shapes, a circle and a cone. The result is a strong and tangible, almost sculptural table, but with a lightness that comes from the simplicity of the design.

The Mesa Round Table by Poltrona Frau is designed for those looking for a piece of furniture that combines formal rigor, material strength, and architectural presence. Designed by Lella and Massimo Vignelli, it is a table that transforms geometric simplicity into a bold and distinctive statement, ideal for interiors where design is not meant to be decorative, but precise, essential, and authoritative. It is a particularly suitable choice for those who want a round table with a clear personality, capable of becoming the visual focal point of the room without resorting to superfluous effects.

Its formal language makes it perfect for those who appreciate pure forms and authentic materials. The Ligurian slate top, with its natural irregularities and a surface that retains the character of its split-stone finish, gives the table a highly distinctive tactile and visual presence. The supporting column in gray Pietra Serena stone and the burnished steel subtop further reinforce this identity, creating a refined balance between mass, visual lightness, and construction precision. For this reason, the Mesa Round Table is particularly well suited to people looking for a round stone table or a piece of furniture that makes materiality its primary means of expression.

In a contemporary dining room, Mesa works extremely well for those who want a table with a strong sculptural quality, capable of giving structure to the space. The round shape naturally encourages conversation and a more harmonious seating arrangement, but what truly sets this table apart is the way it shapes the space around it. It is ideal for people who want an orderly, essential, high-quality dining room, where the table is not merely a place for meals but an element that defines the overall tone of the room. In an open-plan space, for example, it can help create a clearly defined and independent dining area while remaining perfectly integrated into the overall interior design.

The Mesa table is also highly suitable for those who love minimalist yet warm interiors, where materiality compensates for the reduction of decorative elements. In homes featuring fine hardwood floors, large rugs, upholstered seating, architectural bookcases, or textured walls, its combination of slate, stone, and burnished steel creates a highly sophisticated point of balance. It is a particularly compelling choice for people who favor understated, refined, and enduring interiors, where perceived value comes from the quality of the materials and the precision of the proportions rather than from the number of elements in the space.

From a functional perspective, Mesa lends itself well to a variety of settings. It is perfect for those who want a substantial yet understated dining table, for those who enjoy entertaining in a refined and sophisticated setting, for those who want a formal dining area at home, or for those looking for a table with enough visual presence to anchor rooms with high ceilings or expansive spaces. At the same time, its formal strength also makes it an appealing choice for professional offices, private meeting rooms, executive lounges, or management spaces, where it can convey design culture, stability, and timeless elegance.

Another particularly interesting aspect is its ability to resonate with people who appreciate furniture with a quiet yet authoritative presence. Mesa does not rely on theatrical mechanisms or exuberant details: it appeals to those looking for a table that will remain relevant over time, age gracefully, and retain its appeal through the essential nature of its form. It is ideal for those who recognize the value of a design that does not follow trends, but instead focuses on the relationship between geometry, material, and function.

In contract and prestigious professional settings, the table can find a natural place in high-end meeting rooms, private reception areas, executive offices, showrooms, or hospitality spaces with an understated, contemporary aesthetic. In these settings, it is ideal for those who want a table that communicates solidity, elegance, and a strong design identity, providing a substantial surface without sacrificing formal clarity.
