Design, architecture and hospitality in the heart of Val d’Orcia

In the medieval village of Castiglioncello del Trinoro, among the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia, an extraordinary experience comes to life, blending architecture, art, design and luxury hospitality. Poltrona Frau contributes to the Monteverdi Tuscany project – envisioned by American lawyer of Italian origins Michael L. Cioffi – with two new fine dining spaces: Zita and Oreade, designed by the internationally renowned studio Foster + Partners.

ZITA: A CONTEMPORARY OSTERIA AND ART GALLERY IN VAL D’ORCIA

Zita is a contemporary osteria that pays tribute to Tuscan farming traditions, transforming the memory of the place into a refined experience of conviviality and culture. The project recovers disused village buildings – ancient cellars, a barn and a stable – now converted into intimate spaces hosting a restaurant, a contemporary art gallery and cultural gathering areas.

The gastronomic concept, curated by chef Riccardo Bacciottini, merges international experience gained in prestigious kitchens such as Gordon Ramsay’s Maze and René Redzepi’s Noma with the use of products cultivated within Monteverdi’s own farm estate.

For Zita, Poltrona Frau contributed with both iconic and custom furnishings: the Dezza sofa by Gio Ponti, the bespoke Viola chairs in moka-stained ash wood, the custom Ming’s Heart armchairs, Ilary side tables, and exclusive accessories such as a leather wine holder. Each element was designed to harmonize with the atmosphere of the village and its local materials.

The project embodies the values of a hyperlocal approach: over 90% of materials – including wood, Trani stone, reclaimed bricks and hand-carved Cipollino marble – were sourced within a 100-kilometer radius.

Through its Custom Interiors Business Unit, Poltrona Frau furnished both restaurants, combining artisanal know-how and design expertise. The collaboration integrates catalog icons with bespoke solutions, confirming the company’s ability to realize high-prestige hospitality projects, founded on customization, material quality and respect for context.

OREADE: FINE DINING BETWEEN ITALIAN DESIGN AND TUSCAN NATURE

Located on the main street of the medieval village, Oreade is an intimate restaurant with only fourteen seats, open exclusively in the evening. Its name recalls the wood and mountain nymphs of classical mythology, evoking a deep connection with nature and the authentic spirit of Val d’Orcia.

In collaboration with Foster + Partners, Poltrona Frau created custom furnishings such as a Pelle Frau® sling to store guests’ personal items, a bespoke bag holder, and acoustic panels crafted from woven Pelle Frau® leather and wood, designed to ensure comfort and an intimate sound experience.

Oreade’s atmosphere is inspired by Arte Povera and local craftsmanship. Materials such as stone, iron and wood are left in their natural imperfection, creating an authentic backdrop for chef Riccardo Bacciottini’s cuisine. Here, Tuscan fine dining meets an international perspective, in constant dialogue with the seasons and the land.

With Zita and Oreade, Poltrona Frau confirms its ability to shape unique hospitality experiences through Italian design, thanks to a know-how that combines craftsmanship, customization and material excellence.

Monteverdi Tuscany represents a new chapter where design and luxury hospitality enhance the cultural identity of Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, projecting it into a contemporary dimension of international excellence.

Foster + Partners

Foster + Partners is a global studio for architecture, urbanism and design, rooted in sustainability, which was founded over fifty years ago in 1967 by Norman Foster. Since then, he and the team around him have established an international practice with a worldwide reputation for thoughtful and pioneering design, working as a single studio that is both ethnically and culturally diverse. The studio integrates the skills of architecture with engineering, both structural and environmental, urbanism, interior and industrial design, model and film making, aeronautics and many more – our collegiate working environment is similar to a compact university. These diverse skills make us capable of tackling a wide range of projects, particularly those of considerable complexity and scale. Design is at the core of everything that we do. We design buildings, spaces and cities; we listen, we question, and we innovate.
