The Brussels Airport, a hub of international traffic, has chosen to elevate the traveler experience with an innovative and sophisticated space in the Connector area, located in the Schengen terminal. Here, where passengers pause to relax, work, or prepare for their next flight, Poltrona Frau has installed 89 seats from the new Bay Lounge seating system, designed by Foster & Partners in collaboration with Poltrona Frau’s Custom Interiors Business Unit, complemented by 8 Cove armchairs, also designed by Foster & Partners.

At the heart of the project is the modular Bay System, composed of two distinct configurations tailored to different use cases. Bay Lounge, with its wide and padded seats, is ideal for extended waits, offering superior comfort and modular, customizable layouts featuring concave, convex, and straight elements. Bay Gate, on the other hand, is designed for shorter stays in high-density areas like boarding gates, combining a lightweight, ergonomic design with recyclable materials to ensure sustainability, flexibility, and maximum efficiency in busy spaces.

For the Brussels project, Bay Lounge was customized with Pelle Frau® SC in three refined shades—Tortora, Celadon, and Calypso—and enhanced with decorative planters to introduce a touch of nature to the space. Alongside Bay Lounge, the Cove armchairs complete the setting, providing travelers with individual areas to work or unwind in total tranquility.

The versatility of the Bay System makes it a universal seating solution, suitable not only for airports but also for train stations, university campuses, offices, hotels, museums, and a variety of public spaces. Its modular structure ensures a flexible and durable configuration, capable of adapting to the evolving needs of contemporary waiting areas.

With this project, Poltrona Frau reaffirms its commitment to bringing Made in Italy design to the world’s most prestigious transit hubs, transforming waiting moments into experiences of unparalleled comfort and elegance.

Designed by
Foster + Partners

Foster + Partners has always been guided by a belief that the quality of our surroundings has a direct influence on the quality of our lives, whether that is in the workplace, at home or in the public realm. Allied to that is an acknowledgement that architecture is generated by the needs of people - both material and spiritual - and a concern for the physical context and the culture and climate of place.

Foster + Partners believe the best architecture comes from a synthesis of all the elements that separately comprise and inform the character of a building: the structure that holds it up; the services that allow it to function; its ecology; the quality of natural light; the symbolism of the form; the relationship of the building to the skyline or the streetscape; the way you move through or around it; and last but not least its ability to lift the spirits. This holistic approach is augmented by a strong commitment to the clients we serve, and also to the public domain and the many users involved. A high degree of personal service, coupled with respect for the precious resources of cost and time, therefore characterises our client relationships.
