Concept and Design

Ren is a symbolic reference to the centrality of human beings in interior design. Armchair, sofa and a complete collection of furniture accessories inspired by the Chinese ideogram “ren”, which means “person”.  The longer stroke sticks out slightly and is supported by the shorter stroke: a symbol, pure and simple, that transforms into an original design element characterising the profile of every object. When designing the elements in this series, Neri & Hu sought to maximise their versatility and adaptability to different spaces, giving people the chance to create welcoming homes with the utmost freedom. In fact, they can be used in the entrance hall, living room, bedroom, bathroom and study, but are also perfect for non-domestic spaces such as meeting rooms or waiting areas. All of the objects are made of wood, brass and saddle-leather: fine materials that are showcased thanks to the simplicity of the design.

The Ren bookcase by Poltrona Frau, designed by Neri&Hu, is a furnishing element that interprets storage as an integral part of domestic architecture. It is not merely a bookcase intended to hold books and objects, but an element capable of introducing visual order, structural lightness, and material warmth into a space. The design is developed through a wooden structure with essential lines, enriched by leather and metal details, with wall-mounted and freestanding versions that allow it to adapt to different needs and very different settings.

The Ren bookcase is particularly suitable for people looking for a bookcase that can furnish a room even when it is not full, thanks to a design that always maintains a strong visual presence. In a living room, it can become a sophisticated backdrop for books, art objects, small collections, and decorative accessories; in a study, it can help create a more intimate and authoritative atmosphere; in an entrance area or passageway, it can add character without weighing down the space. Its essential language, rich in detail, makes it suitable for those who want a storage piece that is neither anonymous nor purely functional.

In a contemporary living room, the Ren bookcase works particularly well for people who want to give structure to the space through open and visually light furnishings. Unlike more enclosed or massive bookcases, the relationship between solids and voids preserves a sense of openness, depth, and perceptual continuity. This is especially interesting in open-plan interiors, where there is often a need for furniture that organizes the space without dividing it too sharply. In some configurations, especially in the freestanding version, it can also help define the different functions of the room more clearly, becoming a kind of elegant filter between different areas of the home.

The presence of wood and leather makes the Ren bookcase suitable for people who love minimalist interiors that do not feel cold, where clean lines are balanced by noble materials and refined textures. Canaletto walnut or natural ash finishes, together with Pelle Frau or Saddle Extra upholstery, allow it to fit naturally into interiors with neutral, earthy, or warm tones, as well as into more graphic and contemporary spaces. It is a particularly convincing solution for those who want to bring a tangible sense of quality into the home, expressed through surfaces that reward close observation and details that reveal themselves in everyday use.

This bookcase is also very well suited to people who want to create a refined reading area or private study. Paired with a distinctive armchair, a low table, and good lighting, it can help create an environment dedicated to concentration, reading, or conversation. In a professional study or an executive-style home office, the Ren bookcase conveys competence, taste, and attention to detail, making it ideal for those who want a work environment that feels welcoming yet authoritative.

The possibility of choosing between different versions further expands its range of applications. Sources mention a low version, a tall version, and a freestanding version, with different proportions and installation methods. This makes the Ren bookcase suitable for people who want to calibrate the furniture according to the room, the available height, and the role the bookcase will play within the space. The taller version can become a strong vertical element, ideal for important walls and rooms with generous ceiling heights; the lower version can fit in more discreetly, perhaps accompanying a fitted wall, a conversation area, or a passageway.

From an aesthetic point of view, the Ren bookcase is an ideal choice for people who appreciate furniture with a recognizable cultural and design identity. The project takes inspiration from the graphic form of the Chinese character “ren,” associated with the person, and develops a balance between lightness, suspension, and the relationship between elements, resulting in a bookcase with a highly sophisticated visual impact. This makes it interesting not only as furniture, but also as a presence capable of expressing a more cultivated, measured, and proportion-sensitive vision of space.

In contract, hospitality, or professional settings, the Ren bookcase can find a natural place in waiting areas, lounges, executive offices, boutique hotels, or elegant meeting rooms. Here, it responds to the needs of people who want to organize the space with functional but non-impersonal elements, capable of creating atmosphere as well as utility. A bookcase of this kind can hold books, catalogs, decorative objects, or reference materials while at the same time helping define the tone of the environment and conveying a very high level of design quality.

The Ren bookcase is therefore a suitable choice for those who are not simply looking for a storage unit, but for a furnishing element capable of bringing order, depth, and character to the space. It is designed for people who want to combine function, elegance, and architectural lightness, enhancing books and objects without turning the bookcase into a heavy visual mass. In this balance between structure, material, and void lies the full strength of a design that manages to be useful, cultured, and visually striking at the same time.
