Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition | Armchair

Shepard Fairey

The Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition, born from the collaboration between Poltrona Frau and artist Shepard Fairey, reinterprets one of the brand’s most recognizable icons in a dialogue between design and contemporary art. Originally designed by Jean-Marie Massaud, the Archibald armchair becomes a true artistic statement: Fairey’s visual language merges with the sculptural silhouette of the original design, transforming its surface into a three-dimensional canvas. Graphic signs and symbolic elements form a visual narrative inspired by the central themes of the artist’s practice, reflecting on the delicate balance between humans and nature.

Produced in a limited and numbered edition, the armchair is upholstered in Pelle Frau® ColorSphere Impact Less, a leather created through a more responsible tanning process that reduces the use of chemicals and water, and produced by tanneries certified Leather Working Group (LWG) Gold. The illustration is applied through high-definition digital printing and enhanced by selective 3D embossing, creating delicate tactile reliefs that emphasize the material depth of the artwork.

In line with Poltrona Frau’s commitment to responsible luxury and the environmental and social awareness that characterizes Shepard Fairey’s practice, the collaboration extends beyond the object through a partnership with Treedom: for every armchair sold, two coffee trees will be planted in Guatemala, in the Huehuetenango region, supporting a community of 80 Indigenous women.

The Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition is available exclusively through a selection of authorized Poltrona Frau retailers worldwide.

Concept and Design

An icon of design meets one of the most influential voices in contemporary street art. With Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition, Poltrona Frau and Shepard Fairey transform the celebrated armchair designed by Jean-Marie Massaud in 2009 into an artistic statement that brings together art, craftsmanship, and cultural engagement.

Produced in only 200 numbered pieces, Archibald Delicate Balance celebrates what endures, evolves, and remains meaningful over time. An emblem of sculptural elegance and comfort, Archibald is reimagined without losing its identity, becoming a bridge between urban culture and Italian savoir-faire.

Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition is a seating piece designed for those who are not simply looking for an armchair, but for an element capable of giving identity to a space. In a living room, in a private lounge, or in an elegant study, this presence immediately becomes a focal point: it does not simply fill the space, it interprets it. Its value is expressed above all when the décor is meant to convey sophistication, attention to detail, and balance between comfort and image.

In a contemporary living area, it can become the ideal seat for creating a sophisticated conversation corner, especially next to a sofa with clean lines, a textured coffee table, and warm, controlled lighting. In more classic interiors, on the other hand, it works as a refined contrast element: a presence that updates the overall setting without breaking its harmony. It is particularly suitable for those who desire interiors capable of conveying exclusivity, but without ostentation.

Its limited edition nature adds a further level of interest. It is not simply about choosing a beautiful and well-crafted armchair, but about introducing into a home or a project an object perceived as rarer, more selective, and more memorable. This makes it highly suitable for people who want to create interiors with a strong personal identity, where every piece has a precise role. In this sense, it can be appreciated not only as a seat, but also as an almost collectible element, capable of interacting with artworks, statement rugs, custom-made bookcases, and high-end finishes.

From the point of view of everyday use, an armchair of this kind lends itself very well to moments of relaxation, reading, and conversation. It is the type of seat that can enhance a relaxation corner near a window, an area dedicated to books, or a more intimate space inside a spacious master bedroom. In a representative home office, it helps create an atmosphere that is less technical and more welcoming, ideal for those who receive guests, clients, or collaborators in a domestic yet highly curated environment.

It can also work extremely well in high-end hospitality projects. In a suite, in an intimate lobby, in a private lounge, or in a premium waiting area, it immediately communicates perceived quality, aesthetic attention, and a certain idea of elegant hospitality. In these contexts, it is useful when the goal is to convey not only comfort, but also a coherent narrative made of materials, design, and brand prestige.

From a stylistic point of view, it is a convincing choice for environments characterized by neutral palettes, warm tones, textured surfaces, dark or light woods, understated metals, and rich yet non-overpowering fabrics. It can fit into contemporary interiors, soft minimal spaces, modern classic settings, and even eclectic contexts, provided that the project has a precise direction. The best effect is achieved when enough visual space is left around it: it is not an armchair meant to be “hidden,” but rather highlighted.

For many people interested in interior design, its charm lies precisely in the balance between visual presence and livability. It is suitable for those who want a home capable of welcoming, but also standing out; for those who imagine the living room as a place of representation and well-being; for those who pay attention to the product signature, craftsmanship, and the coherence of the overall composition. In a primary residence, in a prestigious second home, or in a carefully selected professional space, it can become that detail that changes the overall perception of the environment.

It is also particularly interesting for those who make highly personalized requests connected to their lifestyle: for example, people who desire an elegant yet not cold reading corner, an important seating piece for a living room with artworks, a distinctive piece for a contemporary home with natural materials, or an iconic armchair to include in a sophisticated project without falling into predictable décor. In all these cases, the product can be perceived as a credible response because it combines recognizable design, prestige, atmosphere, and a strong ability to characterize the space.
