Archibald | Stool with wood base

Jean-Marie Massaud

The backrest frame of the Archibald Stools is made from moulded rigid polyurethane. The internal padding is in soft moulded polyurethane and polyester wadding. The seat frame is made from birch plywood with padding in polyurethane foam and polyester wadding. It is supported by an apron which connects it to the base. The seat is upholstered entirely in Pelle Frau® leather or fabric. The Archibald Stools can come with a wooden 4-legged base, available in two heights, or the classic metal stem. In the former, the feet are in solid ash and come with a Moka or Wenge stain, and there is a rectangular-section stainless steel footrest which has a unidirectional brushed finish on the top side and a mirror-polished finish on the other three sides. In the version with metal base the steel stem swivels and its height can be adjusted using a cushioned gas spring controlled by a stainless steel lever positioned underneath the seat to the right. The stainless steel footrest with rectangular section gradually thins towards the outside. The floor base plate is also made of steel. All visible surfaces are in mirror-polished steel except for the top of the footrest which has a unidirectional brushed finish.

Concept and Design

Poltrona Frau’s Archibald family continues to grow with the Archibald Stools. Designer Jean-Marie Massaud revisits the design formulas that are so dear to him: clean and sleek details for the wooden or metal bases, softened by the curved and welcoming forms of the seat covered in Pelle Frau® leather or fabric. The result is a series of impeccably stylish stools whose more informal allure makes them particularly eclectic and suitable for both modern residential spaces and hotels or hospitality. The ideal complement for the Bob Bistrot series of side tables, the Archibald Stools can be easily matched with other styles or decor to add a touch of sophisticated elegance to classic or modern settings.

Designed by
Jean-Marie Massaud

Born in Toulouse in 1966, Jean-Marie Massaud graduated in 1990 from Les Ateliers, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle, Paris. He began to work both in Asia and in France, finally opening his own office in Paris in 1994. Since than, he has dedicated himself to industrial and furniture design, building important relationships with brands such as Authentics, Baccarat and Magis. His collaboration with Marc Berthier and his work in the field of town planning led him towards design and architecture. He is concerned with design in various contexts, industrial products and furniture. His contextual approach centres on research into the essential, within which the individual remains the centre of attention. It is a work upheld by research into the senses, magic, and vital emotion which brings him to work with very different brands: Cassina, Poltrona Frau, Cappellini, Cacharel, Lancôme, Tronconi and Yamaha offshore.

His works have been awarded several prizes and many of his designs are nowadays on show in the design collections of the major museums worldwide: from Amsterdam, Chicago, London, Paris and Zurich: from the permanent collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne de Paris to the permanent collections of the Museum für Gestaltung, Zürich, of The Chicago Athenaeum- Museum of Architecture and Design, of The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and of The Musée des arts Décoratifs, Paris.
